Musings of a Mama

Thoughts of a Hair-Brained Mom…

It’s Raining… It’s Pouring… January 29, 2008

My husband is snoring…

Poor Dandall… he is STILL sick.  This means someone (sometimes more than just one) has been sick in our house since the beginning of December.

Dandall has been sick on and off since Christmas.  He is a freak of nature, and has a condition called Addison’s disease.  He was diagnosed with it when Mr. Man was 18 months old, after being very ill for a year.  He lost 40 pounds, could barely get out of bed, and he and I both seriously thought he was dying.  Of course, I didn’t admit that to him at the time, but I did, and I was scared.  It was very trying on our marriage, his career, and his parenting.  THANK GOD, we finally found out what it was, and now he is much better.  He will though have to take daily medication for the rest of his life, and there are some drawbacks, like a low immune system, hence the lingering cold.

Dandall thinks he is VERY special because of his “condition” and he milks it for all it is worth.  Truthfully, he is special, because only 1 of 1,000 people have the disease.  Don’t tell him that I agree with him though.  And, if you ever happen to be  somewhere with him, and I am not there, and he doesn’t have his medic alert bracelet or necklace on, will you please smack him on the head for me?  He never wears either, and it pisses me off.  I kind of understand this too though, because he is an otherwise healthy, young man, and doesn’t want people to be wondering what is “wrong” with him when they see his medic alert stuff.  Again though, I will not admit to that either!

So please sicky karma… leave our house, and go bother some other sleep deprived family!

Not My Daughter… October 16, 2007

Doodle Bug’s head has gotten misshaped.  I mean really misshaped.  One whole side of her head is larger than the other.  When other people started commenting on it, I decided it was time to go to the doctor.

Me: “Okay Dr. C. this is my yearly crazy mom visit!  I am sure there is nothing worng, and I am overreacting, but can you see how Doodle’s head is misshaped?

Dr. C.: (without even taking a long glance)… “Yes… I can.” (he then proceeds to feel all around her head for a good 10 minutes.)

Me: “So… it is nothing, right?”

Dr. C: “Well…” (this is when my heart started to sink)

Dr. C.: “It could be a few things, but we won’t panic until she is 6 months old.”

Me: “HUH???”

Dr. C: “I want you to start laying her on this side of her head at all times… immediately.  Right now, I am going to call it a positional cranial deformity, which basically means I think she is laying on one side of her head too much and it is shifting everything.  She may have to wear a cranial helmet, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”

Me: “Okay… I can live with a cranial helmet. Not too horrific.”

Dr. C.:  “Well… her cranial plates are also fusing together more quickly than my liking.  If this continues, she may need cranial surgery.  We go in, peel down the top part of her head (yes… these were his exact words!) remove a portion of her skull, close her back up, and the plates fuse together again.”

I think at this point, he could see my complete look of horror…

Dr. C.: “But don’t worry… 99% of kids that have this done, their heads completely grow back normally.”

Me:  “Um… excuse me… I am still in shock over you discussing removing part of my child’s skull…”

So… I call Dandall, refusing to freak out over the phone.  I tell him, and his first words are “Oh no… not my daughter!!!”

We are both refusing not to freak until 6 months though.  I am hoping for just a helmet head!  She is beautiful no matter what though…
